Hearing on juvie center abuse set

Friday, March 03, 2006
Chicago Sun-Times

A federal judge Thursday gave lawyers for youths at Cook County's Juvenile Detention Center what they asked for: a hearing that could last four days or more for them to make their case that children are mistreated at the center. The lawyers plan to put Supt. Jerry Robinson and his boss, J.W. Fairman, on the stand and question them about their credentials to run a juvenile detention center, said Harvey Grossman, attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents the young detainees at the facility, formerly known as the Audy Home. County attorney Patrick Driscoll said his team of lawyers will continue meeting with the ACLU to try to reach an agreement, making the April 18 hearing unnecessary.
