3 inmates stabbed at Cook County Jail

Monday, March 13, 2006
Chicago Sun-Times

Three Cook County Jail inmates were stabbed in two separate incidents in maximum security divisions Sunday, authorities said.
A guard and two other inmates were injured in the second fight, which happened about 7:30 Sunday night in the Division 10 day room at the facility, located near 26th and California.
An apparently gang-related fight broke out between two inmates, said Bill Cunningham, a spokesman for the Cook County sheriff's department. Other inmates joined in, he said.
Two inmates were being treated for stab wounds at Stroger Hospital. The guard, who was struck on the head, and two other injured inmates were admitted to area hospitals for observation.
The other stabbing, a result of a fight between two rival gang members, occurred about 5 p.m. in the Division 9 day room, Cunningham said. The wounded inmate was being treated at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The stabbings are the latest in a troubling trend of incidents at the jail, and they come one month after six violent inmates escaped from the jail. They were all recaptured 24 hours later.
A former Cook County Jail guard has been charged in helping the six inmates escape Feb. 11. Sheriff's office officials say the former guard was trying give a political advantage to a former jail supervisor running for sheriff.
The February jail escape was the third there in 10 months.
