Jail contractor loses clearance

A Cook County Jail contractor was stripped of his security clearance after contraband -- including knives and a "personal massaging device" -- was found in his vehicle as he entered the Near Southwest Side complex, an official confirmed Monday.

The contraband was discovered Friday when the contractor's vehicle was searched as he arrived to work on a refrigeration unit at maximum-security Division 11, said Bill Cunningham, a spokesman for the Cook County sheriff's office, which runs the jail.

Four cell phones, two pocket knives, straight razors and a "personal massaging device'' were discovered inside the work van, Cunningham said.

Prosecutors are not planning to file charges, he said. The employee told investigators that the items all belonged to him. But his security clearance for the jail was still yanked because he also had a cell phone and small knife on him, which are not allowed inside the jail.
