Two inmates get 3 years for smuggling gun into Cook County Jail

Saturday, July 01, 2006
Daily Southtown

Two inmates shot at the Cook County Jail in February have been sentenced to three years in prison for conspiring to smuggle a gun into the facility.
Lorenzo Evans, 27, of Chicago and Terry Martin, 28, of Dolton on Thursday pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bring contraband into a penal institution and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a firearm, said Assistant State's Attorney Brian Holmes.
Evans, Martin and fellow inmate Gregory Sherman allowed themselves to be shot Feb. 1 as part of a scheme to later sue the county for failing to protect them, prosecutors said. The three sustained minor injuries.
Randi White, the fiance of Sherman's brother, pleaded guilty in May to sneaking the gun into the facility on Jan. 26.
In a handwritten statement, White, 21, admitted that she wrapped the revolver and bullets in aluminum foil, hid the gun in her underwear, passed through a metal detector and slipped the gun to Sherman through a plexiglass divider, officials said.
Two other men have been sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to the same charge as White.
Tracey Martin, 29, is Terry Martin's brother and Isiah Sherman, 20, is White's fiance and Gregory Sherman's brother.
