Hearings Needed on Provident Hospital

Sunday, June 26, 2005
Special to suffredin.org

The Cook County Bureau of Public Health provides health care for all residents of Cook County through Stroger Hospital, Oak Forest Hospital, Cermak Hospital, Provident Hospital and the Fantus Clinic. Any resident who enters our hospitals is entitled to the highest standard of care.

Recent revelations regarding Provident Hospital raise concern that the hospital is failing to deliver an acceptable standard of care to those who enter through its doors. On July 25, 2005, the Chicago Sun-Times reported several incidents of wrongdoing at the hospital that compromised patient safety. On that same day, President John Stroger appointed John Fairman to head Provident. Mr. Fairmanís history as a hospital administrator in other cities is a cause for concern.

My concern regarding the current conditions at Provident Hospital and the future direction of the hospital under Mr. Fairmanís administration led me, along with Commissioner Forrest Claypool, to call upon Commissioner Jerry Butler, chairman of the Health and Hospitals Committee, to hold public hearings on both issues as soon as possible.

Click here to read my letter for further information on Mr. Fairmanís prior experience as a hospital administrator.
