Juvenile Center motion gets deadline for reply.

COOK COUNTY -- Cook County officials have two weeks to respond to a request to put key operations of the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center into the hands of an independent authority, a judge ruled Thursday.

U.S. District Judge John Nordberg gave little indication of how he feels about the effort by the American Civil Liberties Union and a court-appointed advocate to put a receiver at the helm of the troubled facility.

Instead, he asked about how long the proposed receivership would last and how it would differ from proposed legislation that would transfer control of the center to a Cook County judge, a move that would take at least six months.

Assistant State's Atty. Patrick Blanchard said the county needs time to comply with a federal improvement plan and is "moving in the right direction."
Nordberg gave county officials until June 15 to respond. The next hearing is scheduled for June 21.
