Crash kills a top sheriff's official

A high-ranking official with the Cook County sheriff's department was killed Sunday in a crash on the South Side, authorities said this morning.

Sheriff's Supt. Minerva Santiago was in her Nissan Murano traveling east on 31st Street when it was struck by a southbound Chevrolet Blazer, which apparently ran a red light, at Western Avenue shortly before 10 a.m., authorities said.

Chicago police were considering charges against the Blazer driver, a 27-year-old man.
Santiago, 58, of Palos Heights, was pronounced dead at 10:51 a.m. at Mt. Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

She was a superintendent for women's justice services, said sheriff's department spokeswoman Penny Mateck.

The driver was hospitalized as of this morning, Chicago police said.
