Stroger eyes increasing property, gas taxes

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

by STEVE PATTERSON Staff Reporter

Cook County Board President Todd Stroger wants to hike property taxes, gasoline taxes, downtown parking taxes and the sales tax to help pay for the county’s 2008 operations.
Additionally, hundreds of new jobs would be added to the government payroll to improve operations at county hospitals and the criminal justice system.
Stroger laid out these budget details during an address this morning to the County Board.
Stroger is proposing to raise the county sales tax from 0.75 percent to 2.75 percent, just weeks after the County Board showed no indication it could support such a plan.
Stroger is also proposing to hike the county’s share of the parking tax by 100 percent. For monthly parkers, that would mean seeing the county parking tax increase from about $20 a month to $40 a month.
Additionally, Stroger is proposing to increase the gas tax from 6 cents a gallon to 12 cents a gallon.
Property taxes would go up to pay for the forest preserve budget. The specific amount will be revealed later this morning.
It all adds up to a $3.2 billion budget that must be passed by February.
