Cook County health chief gone

Monday, April 21, 2008
Chicago Tribune
by Hal Dardick

From the 'Clout Street' blog:

Dr. Robert Simon said Monday he’s no longer interim chief of the Cook County Health Services Bureau, a post to which he was appointed by County Board President Todd Stroger in early 2007.

His last day on the job was Friday, Simon said. He announced his resignation last month, saying he achieved his goal of maintaining essential services while weathering a budget storm. But Stroger later said he might ask Simon to stay on until a new independent board to oversee the bureau is formed and selects a permanent chief.

"It’s been an absolutely horrible 15 months," Simon said, noting he had to slash $85 million from the bureau’s budget after his appointment.

Simon said Stroger probably was going to name David Small, chief operating officer for the bureau, as interim chief until a permanent one is found.
