Stroger's Budget Under Fire By Some Commissioners

Friday, October 23, 2009
Chicago Public Radio
by City Room

Some Cook County commissioners are questioning Board President Todd Stroger's budget proposal. Democrat Larry Suffredin says a lot of the revenue included in Stroger's budget likely won't be in place.

SUFFREDIN: He misrepresents again what the sales tax is worth because he says it's $400 million. It's really about $320 million, and our proposal was to cut about half of that. So if we were to cut about half of that, it's about $160 million. I still that's cuttable, either by reducing the sales tax or, I believe, reducing the property tax levy.

Some opponents vow to roll back a portion of the county's sales tax. They want help from Springfield. Lawmakers are pushing a measure to lower the threshold needed to override a Stroger veto. That's after previous efforts to override Stroger on the sales tax issue narrowly failed.
