Cook County Board to consider adding red-light cameras

Tuesday, May 04, 2010
Chicago Tribune
by Hal Dardick

Update: The Cook County Board today did not take action on a red-light camera contract, putting off a vote until questions could be answered about what intersections would get the devices.

Red-light cameras would be installed at accident-prone intersections under a contract up today for Cook County Board consideration.

Under the proposal, American Traffic Solutions and RedSpeed Illinois would install 30 red-light cameras at 20 intersections with “the highest occurrence of accidents,” according to an item on the board’s agenda.

Red-light cameras snap photos of vehicles violating red lights. They are mailed to the vehicles’ owners, along with a $100 ticket.

Proponents say the cameras make intersections safer, and critics say the real goal is to generate government revenue.

The county hopes to generate money from the cameras, but it's unclear how much.

At the same meeting, Commissioners Edwin Reyes and Joseph Mario Moreno are pushing a measure that would bar the county from doing business with Arizona-based companies in protest of a controversial Arizona immigration law.

Commissioner Larry Suffredin, noted that American Traffic Solutions is based on Scottsdale, Ariz.

“If nothing else, this ought to have some interesting twists and turns before it’s over,” he said of today’s meeting, at which commissioners also will consider three measures aimed at limiting the power of embattled board President Todd Stroger to spend money and make personnel moves.
