Two more suburban
communities have decided to opt out of Cook County's proposed red-light
camera program.
Village trustees in Schaumburg last night voted unanimously to opt
out. That vote comes on the heels of Palatine's vote earlier this week.
Mayor Jim Schwantz says Palatine doesn't want the county's cameras in
areas the village has to police.
SCHWANTZ: We feel that because we have primary jurisdiction over that
intersection, and there really isn't a lot that the county provides us
with regards to that intersection. Should there be an accident there or
any type of incident, it's our resources that are going to be tapped and
first responders to those intersections.
The Cook County Board
of Commissioners voted to install red light cameras at 20 suburban
intersections along county roads. The cameras were expected to generate
more than $2 million in revenue for the county.
But after complaints and threats of legal challenges, the county
board voted to allow municipalities to opt out.
