State board to consider Oak Forest Hospital change

A state board is scheduled to consider Cook County’s plan to turn Oak Forest Hospital into an outpatient primary care center.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board meets Monday and Tuesday in Joliet.

The proposal to end hospital services in the Chicago suburb of Oak Forest is on the board’s crowded Monday agenda.

Cook County Health and Hospitals System contends closing the hospital would reduce costs and increase primary care.

About 40 people testified against the hospital closure at a public hearing in January. One person testified in favor.

The Illinois Department of Public Health submitted a report to the board warning against closing the hospital. The report states the closure would increase the shortage of intensive care and long term care beds in the area.
