Preckwinkle to speak at New Trier Township annual meeting

Tuesday, March 27, 2012
Chicago Sun-Times

Fiscal responsibility, performance management and regional economic development will be the focus of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s presentation when she joins with New Trier Township Government as the guest speaker at the Township’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, April 10 at the North Shore Senior Center in Northfield.

The event is one of the oldest traditions of township government in which all townships in Illinois meet on the second Tuesday in April to review the official business of township government. During the meeting Township elected officials present their annual reports and awards are presented to outstanding individuals for service to our communities. The event also provides an opportunity to learn more about the 35 social service agencies the Township funds.

A dedicated community leader for over two decades, Toni Preckwinkle was the first woman elected as County Board President in 2010. She began her career as a public servant in 1991 when she was elected to the Chicago City Council as Alderman of the 4th Ward.

In her 19 years as Alderman, President Preckwinkle built a professional and responsive ward organization and worked tirelessly to meet the diverse needs of her constituents. She has successfully fought for greater funding for education and affordable housing in her ward. She sponsored the Living Wage and Affordable Housing Ordinances, and was a lead plaintiff in a lawsuit to institute a more racially equitable map of Chicago’s ward boundaries. President Preckwinkle sponsored an ordinance that limits the establishment of payday loan stores and was a lead sponsor of the anti-smoking ordinance. She has not been afraid to stand-up to the status-quo, voting against parking meter privatization and standing with a small minority in opposition to the 2008 tax increases. She was awarded the IVI-IPO Best Alderman Award and the Leon Despres Awards multiple times.

Before being elected to City Council, she taught high school history for ten years. She holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago. She is also a wife and a mother of two children.

The public is encouraged to attend the event that will be held on April 10 at the North Shore Senior Center, Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. Campus, located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. The event begins at 7 p.m. with a reception and display of social service agencies the Township funds. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. In addition to President Preckwinkle’s presentation, there will be recognition of outstanding Township volunteers and brief reports from elected officials. More information can be found under the Clerk’s section of the Township’s website at http://www.newtriertownship.com.
