Preckwinkle chooses Florida pathologist to be new medical examiner

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has named her choice to become the new Cook County medical examiner.

In an item just added to the Cook County Board's agenda for today's meeting, Preckwinkle proposes that Dr. Stephen J. Cina replace Dr. Nancy Jones, who recently resigned under fire for administrative problems at the Cook County morgue.

Cina is currently the Associate Medical Director of the University of Miami Tissue Bank, according to Preckwinkle's proposal.

Cina "has served in consulting, deputy and chief medical examiner positions throughout his career, including a position as a Regional Medical Examiner in the United States Air Force," according to the ordinance introducing him for consideration by the Cook County Board of Commissioners.

"Dr. Cina comes to us with outstanding credentials, not only as a leader in the medical examiner field, but as a distinguished medical researcher," Preckwinkle said in a news release. "His wide-ranging expertise and executive experience clearly show he's capable of providing the highest level of leadership and direction that will reshape the medical examiner's office into a model facility."

"Dr. Cina has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Medical Examiners and as President of the Florida Association of Medical Examiners. Dr. Cina holds a Bachelor of Arts from Johns Hopkins University, an M. D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and has authored over 100 scientific publications," Preckwinkle's proposal states.

"Dr. Cina's extensive experience in the field of forensic pathology and management experience will be an asset to Cook County and the Office of the Cook County Medical Examiner," the proposal states.

Cina's term as Chief Medical Examiner would not commence until after Dr. Jones' retirement and confirmation of his appointment by the Cook County Board of Commissioners.
