Touhy Park Summer Festival

Friday, June 18, 2004
Touhy Park Advisory Council

The Chicago Park District and the Touhy Park Advisory Council announce the Touhy Park Summer Festival 2004. The Festival includes a poetry slam, a movie night and a concert in the park. The night of Friday, June 18, the Touhy Park Fieldhouse will be transformed into a literary den with a Junior Slam for the 18-year-old-and-under crowd from 7:30 to 8:30 pm and the regular Poetry Slam for those over 18 from 8:30 to 10:30 pm. The Poetry Slam is the first of its kind to be offered in the Chicago Park District and Park Supervisor Marc Hebert hopes the slam becomes a regular event at Touhy Park. “We hope to attract the budding poets and artists of the community,” says Hebert. Additionally, Hebert hopes to display the work of local artists who would like a little more exposure for their art. There is no fee for the Poetry Slam but pre-registration is necessary. Please call Marc Hebert at 773.262.6737. Local artists may also make arrangements with Hebert regarding art displays. Refreshments will be available for a nominal fee.

Spy Kids 3D is slated to be shown at the park on Friday, July 16 at dusk (approximately 8:30 pm). The movie is being generously underwritten by Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin and 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore. And on Sunday, August 15, at 2:00 pm Touhy Park sponsors a concert in the park. All events are free.

The Touhy Park Advisory Council is looking for sponsors of the festival to help off-set expenses. Any donor of $100 or more is welcome to display signage at each event (sign must be provided by the sponsor). The Touhy Park Advisory Council was awarded a 2004 Seed Grant from Friends of the Parks and has also received a generous donation from State Representative Harry Osterman to help offset festival expenses. To become a sponsor, please contact Anne Marie Lewis, President, Touhy Park Advisory Council: 773.852.6801.
