Cook County mobile app for court docket

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Want to check what time you’re supposed to appear in court to appeal that traffic ticket? Or find out how much it’s going to cost to file a breach-of-contract lawsuit? Or even look at a map of the criminal courthouse where you have to report for jury duty? Well, in Cook County there’s now a mobile app that allows the public to look at the court docket and more, officials announced Thursday.

Similar to the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s website, the app allows the public to search an electronic docket of dates and locations of pending civil court cases by plugging in the names of those involved in the litigation or court case numbers. Criminal cases are not included.

But unlike the website, the public can search a civil case without having to know which court division it’s in. And the mobile app allows the public to save a case, saving them the time and hassle of having to search the database over and over again, Brown said.

Motorists can search for moving violations, too, on the app — either by entering the ticket or driver’s license numbers.

The free app can be downloaded on an Android, iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.. The app was created by in-house staff, Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown said in a prepared statement.

“I am so proud of this new technology venture, which was designed in-house…saving thousands of dollars,” Brown said.

To install from iTunes go to https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id595694855 Or install from the Google Play store at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.cookcountyclerkofcourt.CourtClerkmconnect.

Brown says she’s been committed to bringing the clerk’s office — a legendary paper tiger — in to the 21st Century. But during last year’s election, in which she won a fourth term, Brown found herself on the defensive as political opponents and lawyers criticized her for failing to modernize the office, particularly when it comes to filing lawsuits electronically. Now an expanded e-filing is on the way, her office says.

Brown told the Sun-Times later Thursday: “This is not a response to that” criticism “because it’s not true. We’re only the fourth circuit court in the country to even have a mobile app and that speaks to us being leaders...in technology.”
