At its September 10, 2013 Board Meeting, the Cook County Forest Preserve District Commissioners passed a resolution declaring September 28, 2013 National Public Lands Day in Cook County.

Background on National Public Lands Day:

National Public Lands Day is co-sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Department of Defense, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service and USDA Forest Service along with state, county, city and other local land management agencies and has become an annually anticipated event for local participation on publicly held lands across the Country.

Nationwide over 175,000 volunteers are anticipated to participate in National Public Lands Day. In 2012, volunteers worked at 2,206 sites in every state, the District of Columbia and in many U.S. territories. It was the biggest National Public Lands Day in the history of the event.

With your help this year's event could be even bigger. Volunteers will be working east of the north end of the parking lot accessible from East Lake Avenue. Volunteers are welcome to come for as long as they wish to participate and are encouraged to bring work gloves if they have them.
