Todd Stroger to make bid for Cook County Board Seat

Friday, November 15, 2013
Progress Illinois

Todd Stroger says he intends to run for William Beavers' old seat on the Cook County Board.

Beavers lost his job earlier this year after he was convicted of taking money from his campaign fund for personal use, including gambling, and failing to pay taxes on the money. Stanley Moore was chosen in April to fill the 4th District seat until Beavers' term expires in December 2014.

The former Cook County Board president announced his plans to run for the seat during a Thursday night speech to an urban politics class at Roosevelt University.

Stroger became Cook County Board president in 2006, but was replaced by current county president Toni Preckwinkle in 2010. During his speech Thursday, Stroger characterized his time as president as "four years of just hell."

"I was fighting all the time, the newspapers were just crucifying me,” he said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

After making his announcement, Stroger acknowledged that raising funds for his campaign will be difficult. The primary election is slated for March 18, 2014.
