A 49-year-old man died after falling ill at the Cook County Jail.
Daniel J. Paredes, 49, was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. at Saint Anthony Hospital, a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
He became unresponsive while waiting in a cell prior to a scheduled release from custody at 26th & California, the location of the Cook County jail, authorities said.
Paredes lived in the 7800 block of West Belmont Avenue. He was being held at the jail on a drug possession charge, said Benjamin Breit, a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
His family posted bond and Paredes was in the process of being releaed - in a holding cell in the discharge area - when officers found him slumped over and unresponsive about 10 p.m., Breit said.
Sheriff's officers and medical staff at the jail tried saving his life before he was taken to St. Anthony Hospital, Breit said.
