Stomach Virus Outbreak Prompts Quarantine At Cook County Jail

Wednesday, February 11, 2015
CBS Local

Four divisions of the Cook County Jail have been placed on quarantine after 36 detainees came down with a stomach virus.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart ordered the quarantine in Divisions II, III-Annex, VIII and X until further notice, according to a statement.

Detainees housed in the affected units are under “limited movement,” according to the statement. The divisions’ living, dining, shower, toilet and all “high touch surface areas” are being regularly disinfected, and linens have been changed and are being laundered separately.

No jail officers have reported suffering any symptoms, but staff is being closely monitored, according to the statement.

Division II is a minimum security area housing about 1,700 inmates. Division III-Annex is minimum security with about 350 inmates; Division VIII is medium/maximum security with about 900 inmates; and Division X is maximum security with about 700 inmates.

An inmate’s division can be found on CookCountySheriff.org.
