Apna Ghar, Inc., a Chicago-based group that helps domestic violence survivors in immigrant communities, recently received a $10,000 Cook County grant to expand services to the north and northwest Cook County suburbs.

Apna Ghar, Inc., a Chicago-based group that helps domestic violence survivors in immigrant communities, recently received a $10,000 county grant to expand services to the north and northwest Cook County suburbs.

"We're excited because it's our first grant from the county," said Neha Gill, executive director at Apna Ghar. "We hope it's a start to a good relationship and partnership with them."

The grant, awarded by the Cook County Justice Advisory Council, will help pay for liaisons in Chicago, Skokie and Rolling Meadows courtrooms, Gill said.

Specifically, the liaisons will help facilitate visits between children and parents who require supervision to be with their kids, Gill said.

Often the supervision is required by the court after one parent abused the other and the two should not be in contact, Gill said.

The $10,000 grant was part of $1.1 million in grants awarded by the Cook County Justice Advisory Council in December.
