Subject: Community Solar Pilot Study Sites for 13th District

Wanted to let you know that the Cook County Department of Environmental Control and its partners have selected 15 pilot sites to help study and establish community shared solar power in the region. They will be announced on Monday. The sites selected are located throughout Cook County and reflect a variety of building and property types, including a community college, affordable housing units, a landfill, industrial sites and places of worship. They were selected after an open application process and winnowing down for likely sites based on factors such as size of the site, age of roof, presence or absence of obstructions on the roof, etc.

We thought you might be interested to know that the following sites are located in your District.

CTA Rail Maintenance Facility, Skokie

Hill Arboretum Apartments, Evanston

Warren Park Field House, Chicago

Community shared solar is a solar-electric system that provides power and/or financial benefit to multiple community members, expanding access to solar power for renters, condominium owners, those with shaded roofs and those who choose not to install a residential system on their home for financial or other reasons.

While these and other sites would need to pursue actual solar installation as separate efforts if they are interested (our federal grant cannot pay for installation, only for the case studies), economic business cases developed for each site through the US Dept. of Energy SunShot project grant award will show the way for many different building types across the County to adopt community solar. The case studies and engineering assessments will be used as templates for other property owners who may want to enter into the community solar market.
