Statement from CCHHS CEO Dr. Jay Shannon on today’s dismissal of U.S. Justice Department V. Cook County

Today, the US District Court dissolved the Consent Decree entered into between US Department of Justice and Cermak Correctional Health Services in 2010 noting that the policies and practices that support detainees’ constitutional rights to healthcare are in full compliance. The case was dismissed this morning.

For the past decade, Cermak Correctional Health Services has worked closely with the Justice Department, the court-appointed monitors and the Cook County Department of Corrections to institute best practices in the areas of physical and mental health.

The Cermak team has used the consent decree as the minimum standard for the care they deliver to more than 6,000 detainees every day. We are proud that the healthcare services we provide at the jail today stand as a model for other correctional institutions around the country. The efforts of the staff demonstrate their deep and ongoing commitment to providing high quality care to this vulnerable population. ###
