Cook County plans 3 percent tax on pot
If you buy marijuana in Chicago on Jan. 1, the city and county each want 3 percent.

Cook County plans to tax marijuana sales at 3%, meaning people who buy marijuana in Chicago will pay 6% local sales tax in addition to the state rate of 20% to 30%, depending on the potency of products.

The Cook County Board will consider the tax at its meeting today. It was widely expected that the County  will seek the 3% maximum, The City of Chicago also charges 3%.

Like the City and state, the County needs revenue to meet pension obligations and other expenses. Cities and counties can charge a maximum sales tax of 3 percent when sales begins on Jan 1.
