Foundation, CSX grant promotes role
of preserves in the community

A generous grant from the Foundation and CSX is helping the Forest Preserves of Cook County develop three areas that will communicate the role that the preserves play in the Oak Park/River Forest community.
A dozen art students at Oak Park-River Forest High School have spent months developing designs that will be turned into life-sized sculptures and placed near the General Headquarters, Thatcher Woods Pavilion and the Trailside Museum. The artists were asked specifically to create
art pieces that would be semi-permanent and constructed of natural materials that will decay naturally over time and become part of the landscape.

The students recently presented models of their designs to District and Foundation staff, seeking feedback and suggestions that they are now incorporating into the final pieces. Installation will take place in the summer. Read more.

Raising friends for the Foundation
Board member John Atkinson hosted a Friendraiser breakfast at Willis Tower on April 27 to introduce business and civic leaders to the Foundation. Board members, county commissioners Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Debra Shore and Brookfield Zoo President and CEO Stuart Strahl were among those attending.

Tom Livingston, board chair and CSX Transportation regional vice president, applauded the Foundation’s role in giving his company a way to give strength to the Preserves’ strategic plan. “Chicago has many wonderful cultural institutions, but there’s a whole lot of county out there,” he said. “As a resident myself of Cook County, the Forest Preserves have a tremendous environmental impact as it relates to flooding and storm water management. So for us this has been a terrific way to give to something that does so much in so many different directions.”
Arbor Day in the Preserves
An Arbor Day celebration at the Bunker Hill Preserves celebrated the grandeur of trees. A hardy group of children and adults turned out to plant five trees in the cold and rain. Before the planting, they talked about the importance of trees, their contribution to clean air and water—and that trees are an investment in the future as they benefit generations to come. Through memorial gifts administered by the Foundation, anyone can honor loved ones with a tree planted in the Preserves.
