Man shot near Cook County Jail, driven to courthouse for help

Friday, August 18, 2017
Chicago Tribune
by Deanese Williams-Harris, Megan Crepeau

A man was shot and seriously wounded about a block from the Cook County Jail Friday morning and was driven to the courthouse next door where paramedics and police were called, authorities said.

The 28-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were in a black SUV at 31st and Rockwell streets when someone in another car fired at them around 11:15 a.m., police said.

The man was struck several times, and the woman drove him to the entrance of the courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue, police said.

Paramedics removed the man from the SUV and took him in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Court records show the man had appeared at the criminal courthouse Friday morning and pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving on a revoked or suspended license.

No one was reported in custody.

This was the third shooting near the sprawling jail and courthouse complex on the West Side since March.

On March 6, Kamari Belmont, 23, was killed several blocks south of the jail after being released because prosecutors failed to give him a timely trial on a murder charge. Police were investigating whether Belmont was targeted by a rival gang after two friends picked him up from the jail and drove south on California Avenue.

On March 20, a 21-year-old man was walking to the courthouse when he was hit by shots fired from someone in a white van, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition with six gunshot wounds to the groin area, officials said.
