Emily Williams Guthrie Honored as 2018 Unsung Heroine

Special to suffredin.org

Emily Williams Guthrie of Evanston was honored as the 2018 Unsung Heroine from the 13th Cook County Board District. Guthrie was honored by the Cook County Commission on Women's Issues for her role as a tireless community advocate and dedicated volunteer.

Guthrie was instrumental in bringing First Night Evanston back after a five-year hiatus. First Night Evanston aims to bring performing artists to the community at a reasonable price and to celebrate New Year's Eve as an alcohol-free event. Guthrie has served on First Night Evanston’s board since 1992.

Additionally, Guthrie is director and past chairman of Evanston Safety Town, a summer camp for 4 to 6-year-olds that focuses on safety instruction. Guthrie has been a leader of the program since 1985. Safety Town has been an inspiration to many communities around the country. It includes safety instruction about crossing the street, fire prevention, when to call 911 and includes visitors from the police and fire departments, a therapy dog for pet safety, water and bike safety. A large part of Safety Town's success is the 100 teen volunteers who counsel 1 to 3 children each.

Guthrie was honored along with 17 other women - one from each of the 17 county districts and one from Cook County at large – during Women's History Month. Unsung Heroine honorees were selected based on their contributions to their communities, families and professional endeavors that are vital, but seldom recognized. They are drawn from the community they serve. The 21st Annual Unsung Heroine Awards Breakfast was held on March 1, 2018 in the Chicago Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall. The award was presented by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and the event was emceed by Judy Hsu from ABC7.
