Measles case confirmed in Cook County; here's a list of places others might have been exposed

A case of measles has been confirmed in Chicago’s northern suburbs, and health officials are putting out a warning to others who might have been exposed.

The Cook County Department of Public Health released a list late Wednesday of 16 locations in the northern suburbs and downtown Chicago the infected person visited before the illness was discovered. They include a school in Deerfield, a fitness center in Glencoe, a restaurant and theater in Chicago, and grocery stores in Northbrook and Niles.

Health officials are alerting the public to the possibility of exposure to the highly contagious disease, which can remain airborne for hours after an infected person has left. Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and brain swelling. The north suburban resident who was diagnosed with measles Tuesday had recently visited a country “with ongoing measles transmission,” officials said. The person is no longer infectious.

Illinois has averaged a little more than five cases of measles per year over the last several years, with six cases reported so far in 2019, according to the most recent figures available. Health officials urge people to stay up to date on vaccines, as parents who have declined to get their children immunized have contributed to a resurgence in measles. Just this week, a county in suburban New York banned unvaccinated children from public spaces as it tries to stem an outbreak of the disease.

Symptoms of measles include fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Anyone who visited the following locations in the time frames listed below — and who shows symptoms of measles — should call a health care provider or health department before going to a doctor’s office or emergency room, as special arrangements will be made to avoid potential additional exposures to other patients.

For Evanston, call 847-448-4311.

For Chicago, call 312-746-5380, then selection option 1.

There is no longer an infection risk at the locations listed, officials said. The possible sites and times of exposure are as follows:

9 a.m. -noon March 18: Full Circle Fitness, 55 Green Bay Road, Glencoe.
